In mathematics, a side note is a remark made in the margin by a mathematician while working out a problem. The two methods of referencing materials will usually appear together within the same document or website. Side notes are often used in addition to formal footnotes. Modern uses of side notes include science journals, academic papers, and literary works such as novels and short stories. They were first introduced by Renaissance scholars like Desiderius Erasmus and Christopher Marlowe. Side notes are used to highlight important points during reading, list ideas for future articles, or simply provide additional information about the topic at hand. ![]() And she meets a man unlike any she has ever encountered-a white man dressed like a Native American: Nathaniel Bonner, known to the Mohawk people as Between-Two-Lives. It is a place unlike any she has ever experienced. Elizabeth Middleton leaves her comfortable English estate to join her family in a remote New York mountain village. and into a breathtaking story of love and survival in a land of savage beauty. Homestead, a book of short stories written under the pseudonym Rosina Lippi Green, was published by Delphinium.Weaving a tapestry of fact and fiction, Sara Donati’s epic novel sweeps us into another time and place. FYI: This novel is Donati's debut under her own name. The many subplots are skillfully interwoven, and the author's sheer stamina commands respect but the novel is complicated, not complex, overstuffed with familiar, featherweight themes. Nathaniel is the only thoroughly admirable white male in the huge cast-upbringing having triumphed over blood-and no person of color has flaws. Worse, the characters are color-by-numbers cartoons. Then the charm falters as their adventures are padded with details that embroider without embellishing. At first they are an enchanting couple, shooting at bad guys and making athletic love in unlikely woodsy settings. Nathaniel wants Judge Middleton's land, too, for his adoptive people-but, unlike Todd, he also wants Lizzie for herself. One look at rugged Nathaniel Bonner, a Scotsman raised by Mohawks (they call him Between-Two-Lives), and Lizzie scuttles her feminist disdain for marriage and her father's calculations. When Elizabeth Middleton, a proud spinster of 29, arrives in upstate Paradise, N.Y., after a sheltered life in England with her titled aunt, she means to live with her father, Alfred, a judge, and her wastrel brother, Julian, and teach school. Alas, Donati offers less wit and more cant than her celebrated precursor in a hefty volume that is politically correct to a fare-thee-well, suggesting that the author hoped single-handedly to reverse all race and gender bias. Claire Fraser, Gabaldon's time-traveling physician heroine, even makes a cameo appearance as a battlefield surgeon. “Epic in scope, emotionally intense.” - BookPageĮpic in ambition, heaving-bosomed and lavish with pioneer life, Donati's debut inevitably invites comparison to the Revolutionary War-era romances of Diana Gabaldon. This book delivers on that promise.” -Amanda Quick “Each time you open a book you hope to discover a story that will make your spirit of adventure and romance sing. I can think of no better adventure than to explore the wilderness in the company of such engaging and independent lovers as Elizabeth and her Nathaniel.” -Diana Gabaldon Into the Wilderness is one of those rare stories that let you breathe the air of another time, and leave your footprints on the snow of a wild, strange place. “My favorite kind of book is the sort you live in, rather than read. Interweaving the fate of the Mohawk Nation with the destiny of two lovers, Sara Donati’s compelling novel creates a complex, profound, passionate portait of an emerging America. You ever seen or noticed when someone’s hair is lighter at their root, and What is a progressive dye you ask? This means that each time you use it the pigment will build onto its-self and get darker each time you apply the color. Check my blog post here for how to do everything you can to get your hair healthy again. If you’ve already experienced this, you can find my favorite bond builder here. And unfortunately it probably won’t ever feel as soft as it once did. You’ll need to use multiple conditioning treatments to get your hair feeling like hair again. Your hair can take on a new texture and feel straw-like due to everything that’s now imbedded in the cortex. The chemicals do not come out until the hair is cut off. When you apply box dye, the hair is permanently altered. These are harsh chemicals that can be extremely damaging to the hair as well as cause reactions to sensitive skin and allergies. They typically contain high amounts of ammonia, PPDs, nitro dyes, metallic salts, and even unclean henna. In order to save money and lower the cost of the product, the manufactures use low quality dyes, chemicals, and additives to make this possible. I’m sure you probably already figured that box dye isn’t good for your hair, right? Believe me, there is a reason it is so cheap. And sometimes I even use up to 5 differently formulated bowls for what is needed to achieve the ending result. I usually mix anywhere between 3-5 color tubes in one bowl. Typically each formula is customized specifically for what I’m creating. If you have previous color on your hair with roots growing in, you need to mix a different formula for the roots or else you will have two-toned hair.Įven when using professional salon color, I very rarely mix up one color straight out of the box. This is typically a corrective color service and is a huge process that NO ONE should be doing themselves at home without experience or professional products. If you currently have black hair, the black needs to be lifted, with bleach, light enough to take on the lighter brown color. Otherwise, the hair will turn a muddy/green/ash color and fade extremely quickly. This means a warmer, copper, gold, or red color needs to be applied FIRST. If you are currently blonde and want brown hair, the hair needs to be filled before the brown is applied. (It would be nice if it were that easy though!!) If you want a medium brown, you cannot just grab a box that says medium brown, slap it all over your hair and expect great results. Things such as the hair type, condition, color level, is it virgin or colored, medications taken, allergies, underlining pigment, and more are all factors that determine what should be used on the hair to get to the desired outcome. There are many considerations that need to be accounted for before developing the correct formula for any hair color. Trust me, there is a reason we are required to have a license to practice hair. Hair color is not nearly as simple as most people believe it is. This enables me to be able to continue giving you awesome hair tips, so thanks! *** 1. Now, let’s take a look at what happens when you insert pictures into your slides at various sizes and resolutions.īelow are the settings for the stopwatch picture which we’ve scaled to 960 x 540 pixels at 72 DPI. So entering 1in, 2.54cm, 72pt or 96px all yield the same result. As soon as you hit return, the number is converted to your default units of measurement. That then translates to 1280 (960 / 0.75) by 720 (540 / 0.75) dots or pixels and that is what is used to project your picture during a slide show.Ī little known secret is that regardless of the measurement system set on your computer, you can actually enter dimensions for your slide setup and/or objects on your slide by typing in a number followed by px for pixels or pt for points. This is what’s used to scale your picture as it’s inserted into your slide. Now, because there are 72 points per inch (don’t get this confused with dots per inch!) this translates to 960 (13.333 x 72) by 540 (7.5 x 72) points. In the above example the slide has a size of 13.333 x 7.5 inches. Inches are actually easier to deal with here because you’re going to see conversions using DPI or Dots Per Inch. If you click the Design tab followed by Slide Size and choose Custom Slide Size, you’ll see the size of your slide in either inches or centimetres: Let’s see this in practice when examining a standard 16:9 widescreen slide in PowerPoint. ![]() Hence 1 pt = 1/72 inch, meaning 1 inch contains 72 points. A point (pt) is equal to 1/12 Pica, and 1 Pica = 1/6 inch. The 96 number comes from the resolution of your monitor (more on that later) and 72 comes from the world of typography where a point is a physical unit of distance. ![]() A point is actually 0.75 of a pixel on a 96 DPI monitor which comes from 96 DPI / 72 PPI ( dots or pixels per inch versus points per inch). Points may mean prizes in game shows but in PowerPoint, points are not equivalent to prizes nor pixels. To add to the complexity of picture size and resolution, PowerPoint measures picture sizes in points under the hood and then converts them into your preferred measurement system, inches or centimetres, before displaying them in the user interface: Resolution: the density of pixels per inch. Size: the number of pixels horizontally by the number of pixels vertically. So there are two aspects of a picture you need to be aware of: But PowerPoint does take DPI into account as you’ll see later. This is usually only applicable for printed media and defines how many pixels (dots) are crammed into each inch. In addition to the size of the picture in pixels, some image editors set a DPI (Dots Per Inch) parameter. This can cause pictures to appear blurry and degrade the quality of your slide show when displayed on a monitor or projector. When you resize pictures in PowerPoint beyond their original 100% size, extra pixels have to be ‘invented’ by PowerPoint through a process of interpolation. The first shows the image at a normal scale:īut when we zoom in you can clearly see each individual pixel that makes up the picture: The image below shows how pixels are used to form an image. Each of these dots is a single colour and the number of dots affects the file size of the picture. A raster or bitmap picture (contrary to a vector image) is made up of thousands of tiny dots or pixels. OK, so this might not be the most exciting news headline but we need to start from the beginning. So what do presentation professionals need to know about picture size and resolution? Pictures are made of dots But when it comes to PowerPoint, there’s an odd mix of measurements from the physical and digital worlds even though the majority of what is produced is shown on either a monitor or a projector. If you come from a web design environment you might be more familiar with pixels. If you come from a print media background you’ll be familiar with the importance of image resolution and how it affects quality. ![]() When you have a literal 40 people online, you have 5 total matches going, worldwide. I didnt know then what I know now about streaming and gaming though, but that was a massively missed opportunity.įourth, and the deathblow I feel for AR, all these things led to low population queues. The game had massive potential in that arena, and I really wish I'd gotten into casting the ESL games back then for them. Not awful to my memory, but I swore the game was down frequently when I wanted to play that first week or two. There were lots of server problems on launch, as with most games. The prices they did have were too high, their f2p model wasn't ever something they should have done in that manner, and a lot of people who would've enjoyed the game were turned off or disgusted to find out f2p actually was more of a trial version than a true free to play game. Thats three good hard shifts to throw off a less-than-attached fan base. ![]() They announced the game would be free to play, then switched to a paid model by beta. I cant speak to other games, but AR failed specifically for four reasons in my opinion. Think it's partially a combination of these things and some others. What I'm getting at is that a lot of people who don't typically like "turn-based" games would probably like this game, but they stay away from it and end up not giving a shot due to the tag. This is very very different, the way it plays it's very fast paced, it's not like your typical very slow turn based games. When I think turn based, Xcom comes to mind and the similar game. I think the whole entire release was kind of messed up.Ītlas is technically a turn based game, but to me it doesn't fall into the same category as your typical turn based games. In this case it was the better model, but it was already after release. Then the game went f2p, but after you see a 30-40$ price tag and then a game goes f2p, typically that's a HUGE red flag. I think it was a good 30$ initially and it was pretty confusing as to how it all worked. You can't release a game like this, a 4v4 pvp online only game and charge a fairly high preset price. I stayed away from AR for a bit because of the botched release. They just don't want to put in the time - even if Phaedra is the most beautiful girl ever and bakes the best cookies.
